One of the most frequent, not only aesthetic, but also health problems of modern people. It is characterized by increased hair loss and thinning that progresses to alopecia. There are different types and causes that lead to hair loss, but they all have in common a very slow therapeutic recovery.

The most frequent type of alopecia is ALOPECIA ANDROGENETICA (so called male baldness), caused by increased sensitivity of hair follicle to androgynous hormones. In men, it is usually genetically determined and manifests in gradual growth of sideburns and hair loss in the vertex area. It usually starts in puberty, and the final clinical picture is formed by the end of forties. In women, this type of alopecia is manifested by diffuse hair thinning in the vertex area, so that the scalp can be seen through the hair. It is also usually accompanied by increased androgynous values. Increasingly, ALOPECIA AREATA is manifested by hair loss in oval or round patches, which may connect and create larger bald areas. It can affect the scalp, beard or eyebrows, and in more extreme cases may be accompanied by total hair loss ALOPECIA TOTALIS or total body hair loss ALOPECIA UNIVERSALIS. The main cause is stress, but it is also considered to be an autoimmune disorder, that can also be triggered by many inflamed focal areas in the organism (sinuses, ovaries, tonsils, teeth that have not been treated…).

As a consequence of increase in malignant diseases, and therefore use of cytostatics and radiation, another type of alopecia occurred, EFFLUVIUM ANAGENES, which is manifested by a diffuse and sudden hair loss after the above mentioned therapy. Besides the ones already mentioned, other causes may also be different weight loss diets or insufficient intake of minerals, vitamins and proteins in everyday diet.

Normal hair loss in periods of seasonal change (spring – fall) can also be alarming if one loses more than one hundred hairs a day.

Other reasons may be:

• thyroid gland diseases
• anaemia caused by iron deficiency
• infectious diseases accompanied by raised body temperature
• some medical products, contraceptive pills and other factors

All these causes lead to alopecia called EFFLUVIUM TELOGENES manifesting in diffuse and reversible hair loss.
